About Enrol To Vote Week

The focus of Enrol to Vote Week in 2008 is on reminding students that being enrolled to vote is an ongoing right and responsibility. Between federal elections there are state and local government elections and young people who delay enrolling may miss out on having their say.

About

The Australian Electoral Commission’s inaugural Enrol to Vote was conducted in May 2007 as part of a much broader effort to address the challenge of encouraging and increasing youth enrolment before the federal election.

Over 1,700 secondary schools across Australia participated by holding an event or activity to encourage 17 and 18-year-old Australian students to complete an electoral enrolment form.

Between federal elections it is just as important to ensure that young people enrol to vote so they are ready to vote in federal, state and local elections when they turn 18.

Why

Enrol to Vote Week encourages and assists eligible students to fill in an enrolment form.

Currently, one in four 18 year olds are not enrolled to vote, and most 17 year olds are unaware that they can enrol so they're ready to vote in elections when they turn 18.

Young people who delay in enrolling to vote may miss out on having their say when an election is called.
